On Kahneman's System 2

System 2 isn't the smart part of you — it's the slow, expensive part. Calling it "the rational one" flatters it. Most of what feels like reasoning is actually System 1 producing plausible output and System 2 signing off.

Which means: improving thinking isn't usually about engaging System 2 harder. It's about noticing when System 1 has handed you an answer you haven't checked.
